Postharvest technology and fresh-cut sector. Value to fruits and vegetables

Sector:

Fruits & Vegetables

Category:

Quality & Safety

Description:

Youtube video about a cooperation research project between Spain and Portugal that promotes the consumption of fruits and vegetables of regional interest. One of the tools to achieve this goal is to determine the best time to harvest the fruit and its postharvest storage suitability, as the main reason for the decrease in consumption of fresh fruit is the deterioration in its sensory properties by the time it reaches the end consumer. Currently, the production processes for peeled, chopped fruit produce a product with significant damage to the cellular tissue, resulting in low quality and a very short shelf life, which does not meet the modern consumer's needs. It is therefore necessary to increase scientific knowledge in the fresh-cut fruit sector, which will lead to a high quality product at reasonable prices. The fruit sector is of particular economic importance in the areas of Extremadura, Centro and Alentejo. Therefore, collaboration with the main fruit companies in the region has been fostered in order to increase the competitiveness of the business community by sharing the results obtained in this project. By the end of it, it is hoped to produce a postharvest and suitability guide for the fresh-cut fruit studied. This activity is part of the RITECA project (Cross-border Research Network of Extremadura, Centro and Alentejo), financed jointly by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), through the Operational Program of Cross-border Cooperation Spain - Portugal (POCTEP) 2007 - 2013.
